Clancy Denton 0:00
Welcome to the loud quiet. Ooh, empty nester. Okay. What does that mean?
Rick Denton 0:06
I think that actually probably is the theme of the nest. What are we doing? Let's do this. Let's do this thing.
is this recording? Okay,
Clancy Denton 0:15
great. sans, children just does we need to tissue box up here. Follow along on our journey and maybe you know we can learn from others. I don't have a clue how to be empty nesters this is the loud, quiet, living the empty nest
Rick Denton 0:31
All right here we are episode 12. You can see for those of y'all that are watching that we're back on the road again. Heading between Tempe and Tucson. Just got to spend a little time with Tanner. Last yesterday, actually. Yesterday, we both got to see my mom in Austin and then flew out to Arizona got to see Tanner. And now we're driving down to Tempe. to Tucson. Yeah, I am driving. So the brain is more focused on the driving. We were thinking about and one of the things about being an empty nester and enjoying the emptiness life is the memories of the beginnings of your dating days almost as a way to inspire what you're doing in your current world. And so we thought today was just gonna be a chance. We're gonna reminisce a little bit about some of the trips that we took some of the fun things that we did, in the beginnings of our
Clancy Denton 1:28
I wouldn't call it dating, I would say pre Kids,
Rick Denton 1:32
pre kids, that is actually a better, better statement, especially as we hear the first story. I guess it starts a little different categories. So hopefully you all will enjoy this ride as we are going to do a little bit of reminiscing today. And it should be some fun, fun tales.
Clancy Denton 1:50
thinking of this as a parent now. I remember, you know, okay, we met in December of 95. We started just hanging out and having fun. We were introduced by a mutual friend. And so
Rick Denton 2:11
it truly was a friendship. Right. This was yeah, we
Clancy Denton 2:14
we really just enjoyed hanging out with each other. We had similar interests. We just Yeah, we really just had a good time together. And so in August of that year, you were on a project in New England in Boston. And you're like, Oh, hey, why don't you come up to New Hampshire? You know, we can hike and do outdoorsy stuff. And I was like, oh, okay, so here I am, you know, 22 still senior in college, and I go and tell my parents. Hey, so I'm gonna fly to New Hampshire to meet this guy that I you hadn't met them yet? I don't think so. And if you did, it was just me. Casual interaction. But
Rick Denton 3:05
again, because we were just friends. Yeah, I'm in the work world. Yeah, you're a senior in college, but you're just about to be in the work world. Sure.
Clancy Denton 3:12
That you know, so yeah. So I get on this plane to find New Hampshire. Where you know, yeah. Do you friend stay at a bet in practice together?
Rick Denton 3:24
Well, in my mind, before this gets cemented as Oh, Rick had something in mind. Rick did not have anything in mind. This was what? There weren't hotels where we were Conrad knew. For sure. So yeah, bed and breakfast. You get breakfast included. What's wrong with that?
Clancy Denton 3:41
So that was our first and that, you know, the first night. We went to this really nice dinner. We walked down from this bed and breakfast
Rick Denton 3:52
in the forest. Stage is definitely in a forest in the hills there. This is not we're walking on? Well, at the time. It wasn't dark. But we're walking on what would soon be a dark road. You know,
Clancy Denton 4:05
I think it was dark when we left because yeah, no, it was dark. It was flashlights to walk all that. Yeah, it was dark. And I don't really even remember much about the place. I should know. That was my first introduction to a cure oil. I think it was actually their menu. And you're like, Oh, my dad likes those. And so yeah, that was that. And then I mean, somewhere around the middle of our dinner. It just started pouring. And unlike staying like we talked about there weren't really Airbnbs back then. So they which is probably how the bed and breakfast. How the Airbnb morphed because the bed and breakfasts were so popular. So our lady from the bed and breakfast came and picked us up and drove us home. And that night, I'm in the bathroom like, putting in all the numbers that you had to put in to call long distance and called our mutual friend, Jennifer. I was like, Okay, I guess we're a couple.
Rick Denton 5:16
It has been such an unintentionally romantic dinner that I think we just realized that we were friends who really wanted to actually be boyfriend girlfriend. A very natural evolution to a relationship inspired by a trip.
Clancy Denton 5:32
I mean, I still remember like, picking out my outlet Jennifer helped me pick out my outfits. Okay, this is what you're gonna wear to dinner. This is what you're gonna wear hygiene. I mean, I looked like an add on of Abercrombie and Fitch probably from, you know, with some Rei thrown in with the new boots and stuff.
Rick Denton 5:50
Maybe a little J. Crew, little J Crew back then everything went through all the catalogs?
Clancy Denton 5:54
Oh, yes. So that was kind of that was our first trip together, which really, our entire relationship has revolved around, we love to travel. And you grew up with a family that traveled and parents that traveled mine did some, but, and I had gotten to take some good trips, you know, to Europe and that kind of thing with my mom. And we did some things, but I really fell in love with traveling and through you. And that what you're saying is so right, that really became an iconic element of our relationship. Yeah, so we really did, like you said, our relationship and our we really have been intentional about traveling like, you know, the next trip or trips because we went to New York a couple of times, because you were still kind of working up in that area. While I was still finishing school. So here I am asking my Well, no, okay, let me so Jennifer dropped me off at the airport for our first New York drug. And she, her car was in the shop. So she was driving this purple. Gio, I don't even remember which one but it was hideous. And she was my bougie friend that you know, I mean, it was just hilarious seeing her drive around this purple Geo, but she dropped me off at the airport while she took off before I could get my toiletry bag with all my supplies in it. I had my clothes Elise, but I didn't have that bag. She took off and I'm like, Oh my gosh, I have no deodorant, shampoo makeup. So that was the first or one of the first things we had to do when we got when I got to New York.
Rick Denton 7:56
You know what? I think what that taught at the very end is resilience when it comes to travel, because you cannot love travel, if you don't have a sense of resilience when it comes to disruption. So they're a little teen, I
Clancy Denton 8:10
don't even know because we had cell phones then. But I guess maybe you didn't have yours? No, I'm sure I did. I don't know why. And I probably did try to call her but, you know, by the time she would have gotten back it. You know, I mean, but I still remember her pulling off and being like wait. So but I don't you know, we talked about today. We don't remember a lot of what we did on that trip. I remember we ate well, we walked around the city.
Rick Denton 8:41
The Rockefeller I think I guarantee we did all the tourists checkbox. And yeah, and I think that's well building memories. And a lot of our travels are about building memories. You know what I remember that it's just kind of it being fun. And sometimes it's not even the memory that I have. It's the emotion or the memory of the emotion that travels. So Phil's that it's been.
Clancy Denton 9:03
We almost have wheat. And I think, you know, if we went back and can remember all of our Trump's I think we have something from every single one. Even with the kid that we have always we still say and we're like, oh my gosh, you know, yeah, that. But um, but I do and I think it was the second trip to New York. Remember this, you were going back to Boston or wherever you were and I had to get back to Dallas for class. My flight got canceled. And here I am. This 22 year old that has traveled but I don't think I traveled on my own very much. And I'm like, Oh my gosh, I'm at LaGuardia, what do I do? But luckily, that's when the airlines used to care and they put you up in a hotel but then I had to email my professor and say, Oh, no. Why wasn't email I got in touch with her some way saying, um, so I'm in New York, so I'm not going to make impact for class. And she laughed, and she thought it was hilarious. But anyway, so yeah, so that's, that was a fun little. Again, like you just said, you have to be prepared for anything when you're traveling, because you just never know what's gonna happen.
Rick Denton 10:20
I do think that's why maybe the next trip and if it wasn't the next trip, and listener fear now, we're not going to tell you every single trip you've taken, but some of the memories are just so solid. This one, we discovered that there are places in Mexico, that everything is included, when you show up, and what a delight to a 20 something year old couple thinking, Wait, we can just go sit with our toes in the sand, raise our hand when we want to drink or whether we want a piece of food or whatever that looks like. And so yeah, went down to Cancun, had a fantastic time down there. And yet, when we think about it, and this is probably anybody that's in their 50s, think about what they did in their 20s This place was probably bottom of the barrel, I specifically can think about the rooms, I think about the food. Yeah. I'm glad that we've upgraded to our all inclusive it is though, we have developed a real enjoyment of the all inclusive concept at the right places. Because it is so relaxing to be able to just show up. And know that Aside from providing tips, you have nothing to do other than just enjoy yourself. And that's been
Clancy Denton 11:32
great. And I know we're not talking about trips with the kids, but the all inclusive with kids is awesome. If they don't like something they just ate, okay. You know, if they didn't like, their activities for them, our kids are huge fans of the all inclusive. In fact, last night, when we were with Tanner, and Rick mentioned to me, I think we need to go to Mexico. And I was like, oh, yeah, I could do it. Let's go back to Mexico. We're like, we're talking about us. Yeah, hang on there. So we'll see. But, but that trip, though. So yes, we had already been dating for a while. Because I think because you know what? We went to a Rangers game the night before we left for Mexico. And I think it was probably April. All right. Yeah, cuz I remember that.
Rick Denton 12:26
The iconic picture. Alright, well, we're not gonna put that
Clancy Denton 12:29
there's a funny picture where that was before
Rick Denton 12:33
we photobomb Yeah, that was before
Clancy Denton 12:35
photo bombs were, I think that you tried to do.
Rick Denton 12:39
So. A woman was a very successful photo bomb.
Clancy Denton 12:42
Yeah. So we had been dating for a while. And, you know, probably almost, I mean, like I said, it was like April or May. So getting close to a year. And your mom booked this trip for us because she was a travel agent. And I remember when we showed up at the desk, and they were like, okay, so we have you know, two double beds and we're like, Um, can we do one? And so that was just a funny, you know? Haha, like,
Rick Denton 13:12
oh, you know, the mom travel agent may have had a different Well, yes,
Clancy Denton 13:16
the mom, the mom in general. We're married now so it's fine. But anyways, yeah, so yeah, so that that was a fun trip. I remember the chalkboard and we were like, Let's go down you know, because we were still on our 20s Let's go down every drink that they had and try Yes. So let's just enjoy Yeah, so yeah, so that that was a fun trip. So we've done
Rick Denton 13:40
that we've done plenty of beaches and there's more beaches to talk about. The all inclusive is is nice and we've enjoyed some luxury travels to that I was able to get you in some more rustic environments. We really did enjoy camping in the early days. Guys got to go enjoy camping.
Clancy Denton 13:58
This is the bait and switch story now. I enjoyed certain parts of camping.
Rick Denton 14:06
And you know we take the one that we did out in Caddo Lake It's beautiful out there the trees are gorgeous of Catalina East Texas magic Big Cypress trees. Well, we had gotten we've gotten our stuff for spores we got our chocolate and but we were gonna do it the next night. Yeah, we had gotten there and it was going to be a fire the next night. The middle of the night we hear the look out the tent and we see raccoons lifting the cooler and down taking stuff out of the cooler and well I didn't really know what we were going to do with these raccoons or whatever so we're flashing the car lights trying to get up to get him to go away. They finally went away did their animals were not our friend. That true now You enjoy the canoeing, right?
Clancy Denton 15:03
So we're in this canoe, we're going along and rigs in the front. I'm in the back,
Rick Denton 15:10
like a Louisiana swamp. That's what
Clancy Denton 15:16
I'm actually I'm, I don't remember if I was on the front. So we're going along and then all of a sudden I hear him snake, big snake. And so we're like, Oh my gosh. And for those of you that know, I am terrified of snakes. So yes, I was like, done out. Get me out of this lake. I'm out of here.
Rick Denton 15:34
it was a pretty healthy sized snake. It was worth backin up.
Clancy Denton 15:37
And that's so you know, yeah. What was my criteria? So we camped twice, I think and what was my criteria of the campsite? That we?
Rick Denton 15:48
Oh, well, I don't recall the specific criteria. Yes.
Clancy Denton 15:50
Anytime. You wanted to go camping, I said they have to have. Oh, they have to have
Rick Denton 15:55
a bathroom.
Clancy Denton 15:56
Yes. They have to have because not all of them do. bathrooms and showers.
Rick Denton 16:01
I thought you were talking about your current criterias which they have to have.
Clancy Denton 16:06
There's no criteria.
Rick Denton 16:09
The campsite has to be a hotel. The current criteria? Yeah. And that was we did we have certainly enjoyed Enchanted Rock was a really delightful place to camp. I think it's just even Snake Snake is something we'll still joke about now are the stupid raccoons we joke about it's these memories that are planted when we're in when we were pre nesters, too. That are fun to think back on. And as we're building memories, now, I don't necessarily want to have Snake Snake be the next one. But
Clancy Denton 16:38
luckily, again, you had a daughter who y'all camp for a year, up until she saw it. Yeah, but y'all did y'all got to go. Y'all did some really fun.
Rick Denton 16:51
She was tough. There was one that well, we're not talking about her. But there was a 34 degree more than one time. So she was a she was a good little camper. So I didn't get too involved there. It was nice to though. When we did find we got married. It was a 2000 and did our honeymoon. That was not going to be a camping honeymoon. Yeah. A quick shout out to the travel agent mom again. We She helped us plan the honeymoon in Antigua.
Clancy Denton 17:21
I don't even remember being involved in I guess you have hurt. I mean, eyelets violent whatever.
Rick Denton 17:26
I think you're inaugurals, we want to have a very nice and all inclusive, we don't want to think we just want to be in this fit. That's
Clancy Denton 17:37
a very, very small property. I mean, I still see
Rick Denton 17:44
oh my gosh, I can't remember the name of it
Clancy Denton 17:48
remember, but you know, I can still see the bed that was lofted so you can see out in the shower was huge. I can see all that stuff. And the ocean was beautiful. There. The beach was beautiful. Some things we didn't want to see on that trip. Lots of European boobs are not the kind of boobs you want to see. Or the color of the very pale, pasty
Rick Denton 18:19
turning. Probably very bright pink memories not there. But in that it was a European beach indeed. What's good about the honeymoon? Oh, something to joke about, but we were certainly focused on each other.
Clancy Denton 18:31
Yeah. And the food was excellent. I mean, yeah, that just that was a great.
Rick Denton 18:38
Oh, my gosh, we didn't even talk about the trip. When we got engaged.
Clancy Denton 18:43
Oh, I think I actually was talking about that the other day because someone I know is daughter just got engaged.
Rick Denton 18:49
So we set this up. Well, I guess it's not a we set this up. But I think Clancy knew what was going on. She was you were in Baltimore at the time working as a flight attendant. I was in New Hampshire, again, actually, maybe the same project we're talking about. And I set it up to where Clancy would fly from Baltimore to Miami. I was going to fly to Miami and meet her there. i i Weird. Did you find out where we were going? It wasn't until Miami wasn't? This isn't the day of paper tickets. So I was able to kind of mask where you were going either way. It was a surprise what we were doing. Yeah,
Clancy Denton 19:29
I don't know. I don't remember when I found out it was going to be where we're going. But I do and you know, I slept through my alarm. Yes. And where we lived in Baltimore. We didn't have cars. You had to take this train into the airport, which was like just the next stop. You had to walk down this huge hill with your luggage. And I woke up so I mean, I woke up and I started slipping out because I was going to be late. This was before Uber This was before any of that. Thank goodness. Some way well probably because I didn't even do I just probably woke up and thrown some clothes right and made it but yeah, I don't know if when I got to Miami but it was it was the nicest trip like you. I mean first class I mean it was very
Rick Denton 20:23
wherever the surprise was revealed it was you know, oh my gosh I'm doing first class to Costa Rica we stayed at La Finca Rosa Blanca, which is a beautiful property on a just outside of San Jose, it is on a coffee plantation, a horse's chilly in the pool, had a beautiful meal that night, and then had the opportunity to propose to you that night on that trip was
Clancy Denton 20:50
and I love that room because it was all glass
Rick Denton 20:56
up in the top you know, I hadn't even really thought about until kind of looking back but of course we would get engaged on a trip. That's what travel is our is our travel's our jam.
Clancy Denton 21:11
Well. And it's so funny, because in my class the other day when I'm when I'm teaching and we all talk, you know, we I was talking about because one of our friends her daughter's got engaged and you know, it's like, yeah, I'm so glad that they like just did a simple and I said because now with all this staging and all this stuff, and then I was like, oh wait. Rick kind of did that. But we did not have like a professional photographer there to video it or recorded or you know, we didn't do any of that. But yes, you had to have like the rain. Didn't you have it shipped to you there? Was that it within some?
Rick Denton 21:53
I had it secured in a place that you would not have? No, I certainly didn't have it shipped. But I had
Clancy Denton 21:57
had it. Yeah. Oh, we didn't know I had it. That's right. That's right. And you had them put it in the hotel safe? That's right. That was before. Probably you had safes in your room.
Rick Denton 22:10
Yeah. So but But no, we did not post any pictures about it. I think we have one picture that was taken in front of the I think we did the little put the timer on and the flowers were in Yeah,
Clancy Denton 22:21
we have that picture. And, and that's one of my favorite pictures. I love that picture.
Rick Denton 22:26
It is travel. So yeah, I guess we Yeah. So honeymoon, getting engaged. We've enjoyed our travel.
Clancy Denton 22:34
Yeah. And I mean, for our first year anniversary, and this is the one that someone afterwards was like, Man, you set the bar way too high.
Rick Denton 22:44
Hey, if there's any young guys listening to this, pay attention and don't do what I did. It's
Clancy Denton 22:52
taken me to Costa Rica. And see, this is your fault, because you put me in first class, and you can reimburse lots a lot even when I went flying, but because back then it was a lot easier with upgrades and all that kind of stuff. But so you're the one who spoiled me. So don't when we fly anywhere. Like if it's a long trip, I'm like, yeah, I gotta be. I need the line.
Rick Denton 23:19
And you can lie flat on the floor. I did it to Hong Kong.
Clancy Denton 23:26
Yeah. So for our first anniversary, which is we were back living in Dallas. And actually, I guess we were about to move to Houston. Back to the house and started packing everything up. Yeah. We went to Hawaii for probably almost a week.
Rick Denton 23:43
It was a week. We were both in Maui. And
Clancy Denton 23:47
we also did
Rick Denton 23:51
was we changed planes, we'll have an eight hour layover, whatever.
Clancy Denton 23:54
And I will say that's where my job came in to help us because with all the code sharing, we got to fly for free between the islands. So that was super nice.
Rick Denton 24:04
Really beautiful properties that we say. I think Maui Maui was less of a nice of a property but it was such a neat political hyena which the tragedy in line with the fires of this year. We have that memory of that town on what it was and it was so neat. The dinners were so great driving around Maui was so beautiful. We did see the four seasons kind of got the way
Clancy Denton 24:28
we got offered Malli loudly
Rick Denton 24:31
we did not partake listeners and that is a true sentence but it was crazy to come up with a big grin and do it.
Clancy Denton 24:39
And then in Kawhi we you know which is a totally different island like natural light. I know it's a different island but yes, totally that just sounded totally different landscape. Feel the beach is totally different. You can't really get down you know, but yeah, To the higher, it was something we had dinner out on the water and one of those private little bungalow things so nice and that and we did that, I think honor and and that was our anniversary.
Rick Denton 25:15
That was imagine that iconic. It is it is the bungalow. It's the one table setting out there. So you have to walk out on kind of a small short boardwalk to get there. There's a restaurant that has other overwater ones but this one is the iconic one that probably makes up their marketing materials as well. But it was a great place to celebrate our first anniversary that night.
Clancy Denton 25:39
Yeah, I'm gonna have to go back and find out because you know, these pictures are not digital
Rick Denton 25:47
as well. That's also that's where I got that heat rash. Oh my god we may not have. I look like, tiny. I look like I've been microneedle across my entire bottle.
Clancy Denton 25:58
You have like a reaction to the sign. Oh, that's right of the sun. Oh, and then we finally found something. Yes, whenever that big store. Is there. Help? Oh, yeah, I forgot about that. Yeah. So
Rick Denton 26:12
there may not be some photos because I probably looked like a pin cushion. There's photo.
Clancy Denton 26:18
Because I can I can see them in my head. I just have to figure out where they are. It was a beautiful place. Yeah, that that one was really quiet and we haven't been back. We need to go back and we need to, you know, the kids come in. That's one place that a lot of people go to. And we just haven't we've we've tended to do
Rick Denton 26:40
what we spent so much time for international. Really wanted to take them International. Yeah. And Hawaii is such a wonderful place. And you know, it's part of it too is Hawaii is beautiful. We love it. Kawaii has its Grand Canyon. That was amazing to see. Sometimes we get in that mode of Yap. But there's a Mexican beach with an all inclusive two hours away as opposed to having to fly in overnight. I know that slowed us go in there. And I do
Clancy Denton 27:07
remember that because coming back, we flew back to Dallas, I got off the plane and you just say you have gone to Houston. And that's when I came back and packed up the house. And we were moving to Houston that
Rick Denton 27:21
way to end your one year anniversary. Right.
Clancy Denton 27:24
So that was May. And then and what happened on that trip? I was wondering if we were gonna bring us up? Yes, we you know, that was when we'd been married a year, we hadn't really. We hadn't really decided when we wanted to have kids. We knew we wanted kids, we had an ally to fight it. And that was when I told her I think I'm ready to start drying and I think he was a little like, oh, okay, wait, what we're about to move. We're we've only been married a year,
Rick Denton 28:00
even though we're in Hawaii. Can we just enjoy this?
Clancy Denton 28:04
Last night? I think it's not like I you know, and but I do remember that being a discussion, because it was not. And then I think by the end of the discussion, you were on board, I think probably because in our minds, we didn't think that it would happen. And then three months, barely three months later, I was pregnant with her. So
Rick Denton 28:26
let's start trying. And that
Clancy Denton 28:30
happened a lot faster than we thought. So yeah, that's right. So that trip, you know, is when Wait, did you say we started adding to our net?
Rick Denton 28:41
We built a nest. Like oh, yeah,
Clancy Denton 28:45
we had the thoughts of building the nest. Yeah. So
Rick Denton 28:48
you know, and when we were talking about, hey, which trips we have talked about in that one, anything about this? Now, of course we would decide to have kids on a trek. Almost as and I do. Like we're recording this. Now. Sometimes we're too tired on the road trips back and forth. But there's times that we have some of our best discussions when we're traveling. There's something about connecting as a couple then connecting as a couple now when you get out of your routine. I'm not thinking about my job. I'm not thinking about tech, I'm not even think about like miso or whatever, right? It's just because you almost like an artist going to somewhere to be inspired trips. Our trips are our relationship inspiration. Well,
Clancy Denton 29:34
and I think we have also used I mean, being in Arizona right now. You know, there was a time in our marriage that we took a trip to Arizona because we were in crisis and we needed to get some things figured out, which makes us an even more special place to us. And when we were here the last time we actually went back to the original Grimaldi's, which is where we fell in love with her Maltese that we Eight add on. Yeah. And so I do, I do think sometimes you do have to get out of, like you said, the routine, the environment of where you are to get some things figured out. And it's not always, you know, that was that was probably the only I'm not going to call it a negative trip. But that was a we need to get away right now and figure some stuff out. And
Rick Denton 30:24
that was, and it was this is, you know, it wasn't, thank goodness, we had miles and points and that sort of stuff, because and
Clancy Denton 30:31
parents. They were little I mean, this was a long time ago. So
Rick Denton 30:36
and it was, you know, to say there's no way to know in an alternate universe is that what saved a marriage, you know, it wasn't like, we were separated. But we had some real issues that had to be solved for. And there are issues that I won't call them easy, but they were eaten by being able to spend time together and work through them. Travel enabled us to do that. As an aside, let's go back to that. But as an aside, there are also plenty of fights that have been generated by travel because of the stress of travel. So it is definitely both enhanced our marriage and that caused some some spicy ghost pepper moments as well. Sure. Man, it is fun to think about all those trips.
Clancy Denton 31:23
Yeah, and I, you know, again, that's something that's so important to us. And it's not important to everyone. You know, that is a core value, but a core element of our relationship from the beginning that we have carried into our marriage, our children's lives, you know, they love to travel as well.
