Why does Rick say it’s the most wonderful time of the year?

How has the NCAA tournament controlled our schedules over the years?

Clancy Denton  0:00
Welcome to the loud quiet. Ooh, empty nester. Okay. What does that mean?

Rick Denton  0:06
I think that actually probably is the theme of the empty nest. What are we doing? Let's do this. Let's do this thing. Is this Recording. yes, Okay,

Clancy Denton  0:15
great. Sans, children just uswe need a tissue box up here to follow along on our journey and maybe you know we can learn from others.

Rick Denton  0:23
I don't have a clue how to be empty nester there.

Clancy Denton  0:25
This is the loud, quiet, living the empty nest. All right, hello. Welcome back the loud quiet episode 32. You're coming to you. You might have a clue as to if you're watching what our discussion is going to be. Since we are decked out in our Duke attire today, yes,

Rick Denton  0:49
it's going to be an academic discussion around the history of the chapel at

Clancy Denton  0:53
Duke and I'm out for that. So

Rick Denton  0:56
yeah, my limit is it pretty? Yeah. No. Today is definitely going to be all about basketball all about March Madness, because we are recording this on the Sunday after the first and second rounds. And so it's the first weekend of March Madness. It is what I often call and seeing in the in my head the most wonderful time of the year the Christmas song is wrong. This is the most wonderful time of year. And has been for quite a while now. Yes.

Clancy Denton  1:32
Yeah, I mean, I will come in when I come into the story, but you know, are you going there from the origin story going to Duke you know, obviously, most people who are listening know that's, you know, a big basketball dynasty.

Rick Denton  1:51
And it's because I didn't actually start as a basketball fan. In fact, even growing up as much into sports as I am right now. Our family wasn't sports obsessed. My dad was a Cowboys fan. And he went to UT but even that it's not living in Austin. We didn't go to Longhorn games, we didn't tailgate. We didn't do that it was kind of there. But our recreation was more outdoors at the lakes where I was doing scouts or something I don't remember sitting in watching a lot of sports. But I do have a memory in high school. And I can't remember the year but I'm pretty sure it was late 80s that for some reason you t not for some reason, because they were good that your head advanced. And there was something that I was, it was later in the evening, and I turned it off. I think I had it it was maybe it's the Thursday game or something. And I turned off, went back to my room and just was listening to it on the radio, which there again, what a crazy thought to think. But yeah, I was listening to the basketball game on the radio. And some shots sent it to overtime in high school, Rick was like, Wait, this is actually kind of fun. And I sprint out and watch the rest of the game out in the room and watch that. And that was my first exposure to march madness. I didn't carry it forward, though. I just have that memory of it. And somebody say, Oh, well, is that why you chose Duke? I don't even know Duke was a basketball. Like, I'm not kidding. I have no idea. Yeah.

Clancy Denton  3:14
Well, and well, even. Because you went and toured? Surely that's a big thing on the tour there. I mean, it was when we took Tanner tour there, it definitely was realized that it'd be if you're saying

Rick Denton  3:30
to someone, like, let's say that it's a the best telescope in the world or something. If you're not deep into astronomy, you're like, Yeah, this telescope or whatever. I probably was, Oh, that's interesting. That's their gym where they play basketball.

Clancy Denton  3:44
And, you know, my family was very much into sports. I mean, even my mom, and I didn't really, you know, they were huge football. And I know, they all my dad, I'm sure did you know, I remember him doing his bracket that was in the newspaper at some points. So yeah, so I was the opposite. I grew up in a very sports, family oriented or sports oriented family. But I didn't really care. It was just there until I got immersed into it.

Rick Denton  4:28
And it was it was a journey to get me there. Talking about the tour, I remember now, there were T shirts because that the tour I would have toured in 91 That was the year that Duke won its championship the first of what was going to be a back to back. And so I know that we probably we bought T shirts, we saw that there was something there to this this basketball thing but that wasn't really part of the decision process at all. Well then, fast forward to freshman year, and I got to be a part Have what is widely regarded Some may fight me on this but widely regarded as the most famous shot in college basketball tournament history, the Laettner shot, the Grant Hill pass to Laettner to win. And and it was a a moment that I will not forget. I remember watching it, because we thought the game was over. It was a great game in and of itself. And this is not going to be a podcast about hey, let's do a podcast that game it just that was perhaps the moment was like, wow, this is it. I'm in it is it is going to be a basketball life for me. Well,

Clancy Denton  5:37
and I will say that shot yes is I mean, there's an entire documentary about it. And you are so

Rick Denton  5:45
we should qualify for this listening. I'm in the background and behind him and you can visibly see me and so go back and watch. I hate Christian Laettner the 30 for 30 and you'll get the scene.

Clancy Denton  5:58
So yeah, that that yeah, that's that's fun. So you really did get we

Rick Denton  6:02
were in Cameron every single home game. I do not recall missing a game. Yeah, it didn't matter what the school was. It didn't matter. And I'm I'm so glad there's things that all of us look back in college and regret. Oh, I wish I'd done this. I wish I'd done that. At least I know this. I maximized my ability to be a part of what Cameron Indoor Stadium was, and is and have never had a chance to go back. And into the stadium for game. Right?

Clancy Denton  6:30
We Yes. We got to get back in but yes. Well, yes. So then, when we started dating? I did i i enjoyed it. I got into Muay Thai.

Rick Denton  6:44
No, no, I

Clancy Denton  6:45
love sports. Yeah. I just I probably had not watched again, football was what I always thought of I probably had not watched a lot of basketball I did in high school because one of my girlfriend's played. You know, she was very, very good on the Plano East team. And so but yeah, so we had the chance to go to a semi what was the regional,

Rick Denton  7:11
regional? It's that middle weekend out of the three weeks down in San

Clancy Denton  7:15
Antonio did that in San Antonio. That was, I don't know if we were I couldn't find the year so I don't know if we were I don't think we're married. Yeah, we were

Rick Denton  7:23
dating. So this was a dating trip. And that's the one that it was Minnesota playing. And you and I still joke today. To hear a collective cloud crowd of 1000s. Went m i n e s o you and I both flinch. The first time we heard it. They're sitting in the stands going. That is the harshest accent. Collectively,

Clancy Denton  7:42
they were the gophers and the gophers. Yeah, that was that was fun. That's the trip. I do think. I can't remember if it was that one. That we just thought we'd find a hotel when we got there. And we were having to like stay out way far. Way too much. Moto Oh, yeah. I don't even remember it was not anything. Yeah.

Rick Denton  8:08
Because we were probably visiting my family in Austin or something like that. Hey, let's just booked it. Yeah, I

Clancy Denton  8:12
think it was just the last minute that one I think was a last minute thing that we just did. But you also though you know when you were in college, y'all try it you went to

Rick Denton  8:22
didn't get to go to any of the tournament while I was in college, but there was a great trip with Stacy White and I we wait sorry Stacy White and I did go Yeah. During That's right. We weren't Stacy and it was Rick Finley and I that went to one after college. So yeah, did a few of these. Well, you know as Duke would advance you could get access to tickets following your team.

Clancy Denton  8:43
Yeah. And that you know, so then we after we got married, we did get to go to a Final Four. Again back in San Antonio

Rick Denton  8:55
which is a great place what a great place for a final good

Clancy Denton  8:59
venue because yeah, you're this stadium is literally on the Riverwalk, you know, you can walk there yeah, that is the watching

Rick Denton  9:07
the teams on their little boats going by or pockets of fans going by. That is a city that has figured out how to do a final four. Yeah, and that was it really loved every bit of it. Now you you did and that was fun. We did get to watch Duke in the Final Four they lost to UConn I think in the semis which so I have no love for econ since that moment. But you did you mentioned that this was after we got married. Basketball had a significant influence in our wedding.

Clancy Denton  9:36
Yes. I was told we could not get married in March or or into the first weekend of April because it's usually always the first weekend of April. So yeah, so I thought,

Rick Denton  9:51
right I didn't want this to. This is an important part of the calendar so I don't want family to

Clancy Denton  9:58
get in the way. We'll get have that but I did want to mention that you know, Tanner's middle name is Cameron right. And for a while you still wouldn't come to grips with I think really the influence was because it's Cameron Indoor Stadium. Oh, we liked the name I was gonna say, but I think that you're the

Rick Denton  10:21
one that I disagree. It's in the I am never willing to admit that that's why we can I have always been willing to say it influenced the decision. I like the name Carrie godless. Yeah, so and it had influence. So

Clancy Denton  10:34
that is Tanner's, you know, middle name. And you know, he is just as much into all of this as, as evag are on

Rick Denton  10:45
Thursday, he launched the first tech now some of that's because I want to make sure I don't because the two hour time zone, all that kind of stuff. He's the one who said March Madness, those sorts of things. He has

Clancy Denton  10:53
like, three brackets that he's in different groups. And yeah, so. So yeah, so this this from dating on? Yes, it this has been an especially when we were dating. Before and before we had kids. It was if there's a do game on even in just regular season, we don't do anything. We are sitting and watching this do game.

Rick Denton  11:21
Yeah. So I was thinking about that, that obviously now I've been more flexible that sometimes I'll even miss it. God forbid. I think a lot of it's just easier that I can timeshift the watching of the game that if it's on at a certain time. Well, I've got a record, I just went back then I gotta make sure to set the VCR. I don't have to worry about that now. But you're right, the intensity of how I watched and what I watched was okay, much higher back. So So

Clancy Denton  11:47
let's tell the story of what you did in our house in Houston. Okay,

Rick Denton  11:51
now that everybody that if you just hit pause right now, like what the heck did Rick? Well, yeah, Rick did damage to the house, so that he could watch basketball. Try to imagine an era before now where now you truly can just at the touch of a button have all four games on screen at the same time because they're being played on four channels. Your YouTube TV handles that easy. Okay,

Clancy Denton  12:12
yeah. Wait, let me interject right here. Because I was getting mad the other night because I kept getting bumped off of YouTube TV because you were watching on one or two, you ended on two devices because it was the night of the storm. Tanner was watching it in Arizona, and must have had as like, Nope, I am not getting bumped at someone better. Maybe

Rick Denton  12:34
you were both because of weather one of those devices was watching to make sure we didn't get you to run over by tornadoes. So but

Clancy Denton  12:40
then you didn't switch it back. I was like, Are you done now? Get it off your phone and put it back. So

Rick Denton  12:46
we're out of the tornado, watch something. So going back to this era where it was, you know, you're just regular cable TV, there's just barely even the concept of the internet. And what that was like, well, there was a way on websites to watch what was then March Madness on demand. And it wasn't something that you could really get into your TV, you had to watch it on, say your computer screen. While in our home in Houston, our TV room was in one room and the internet because you didn't have Wi Fi I was in another room. And I wanted to be able to watch the game on the TV, but also any alternate games that aren't because you didn't get to choose. You got dumped like you didn't get that. So if your game was on for another region of the country, you didn't get to watch it. So there were times that I couldn't even watch a Duke game during the tournament because of the way CBS had it set up. So yeah, I drilled a hole through the wall between the living room and the computer room, ran a coax cable to be able to run internet into there so that I could attach it to the laptop so that I could watch it over a dial up connection. I'm sure it was high quality watching but by golly, I could watch my Duke game if CBS decided that Houston Texas wasn't going to allow us to watch the Duke game at that time.

Clancy Denton  14:07
And I can't believe I just was okay with

Rick Denton  14:12
we never repaired it. We just put a piece of furniture in front of it.

Clancy Denton  14:15
Oh, wait, no

Rick Denton  14:17
we did. We just put a piece of furniture. So if somehow the owners of the high meadow home are listening to this somehow sorry about that. Hope you've patched it up by now. I'm

Clancy Denton  14:29
sure it's found. Oh yeah, that was 2001 I guess probably probably

Rick Denton  14:35
somewhere around here. Yeah.

Clancy Denton  14:38
Yeah, so I

Rick Denton  14:40
didn't drill any holes in the house. This No

Clancy Denton  14:43
but I love whenever you send me a picture from work and you've got one monitor going with this one month.

Rick Denton  14:51
It is good to be an independent consultant. It is good. Yeah.

Clancy Denton  14:54
And I know we we have pictures but that was back when you had to take pictures with a physical camera but and I'd have to go through closets to find those things now. So anyways, but yeah, so if we fast forward I guess to when your daughter's birthday? Well, we didn't know it was her birthday. Yeah. So yeah Tegan was when was she originally supposed she was supposed to be born on April 26. Went out of the zone. Yeah. Which was like the date of your sister's wedding. And I was like, Oh, I didn't know Rachel, if you're listening. I never told you that. But so yes, so it's, you know, my mom's birthday is also very close. So that weekend, which was final for weekend, we had my mom was turning 60. So we had a huge party for her that I had planned and at a restaurant in Frisco, and I was finishing painting the nursery doing stuff. Well, then on Monday, championship day. That's right. Someone decides if she's ready to come, you know, almost four weeks in early.

Rick Denton  16:18
I get the call at work. And it's mid day. You were at lunch? You're on my way to to do the screaming you turn the speeding back. We gotcha. Gotcha. The hospital. Yeah. Everything's fine, but it's the afternoon and tip off is, you know, seven ish.

Clancy Denton  16:36
She was born at five. That's right. But it all of the pregame okay. Yes. But what do you tell it from your perspective? Yeah. Because here's what I love. I'm, you know, about to have a baby. And you in the doctor you had on your Duke shirt. And you and the doctor are talking about? Oh, yeah, you know, who do you think's gonna win? Because Duke, Carolina, Carolina. Yeah, can somebody and so y'all are down there chit chatting. And I'm like, having a baby.

Rick Denton  17:09
Like in this delicate position. stirrups, and we're talking about the motion offense. Yeah.

Clancy Denton  17:17
So yes. So that child as you said, Well, I hope she's a basketball fan because she's just dressed up

Rick Denton  17:28
Final Four. It's always gonna be her birthday. Which there's some interesting foreshadowing of of her coming on that date, you know, involving and Final Four of where she ended up at school. So yeah, but yeah, she did. As much as I tried to plan our wedding away from it. I thought, you know, we're out of we're in the clear.

Clancy Denton  17:49
No, but she,

Rick Denton  17:51
you know, Carolina won that game, too. I was ticked and at least, you know,

Clancy Denton  17:56
the games always on a Monday. So you're not typically doing too much birthday celebrating on Mondays. But you know, you weren't going

Rick Denton  18:04
to travel to go see Final Fours and then blow off her birthday or anything like that. That's the

Clancy Denton  18:08
end you I saw someone posted this week, they were at a sporting event, and they had their phone sitting down with other something else on it. And I said, Oh my gosh, that's what you used to do. Because with cheer drill team, even soccer. Yeah. There were several games or a or competitions that you were at with the phone going with the basketball tournament on and, you know, watching whatever's going on here. We would find restaurants that had TVs a weekend.

Rick Denton  18:47
There was a dance comp last year was it two years ago either way in the recent past that I vividly remember being at a taco shop and watching Duke beat Carolina with a last second just brilliant one of those classic last second shots on a I think it was on a phone. I don't even think that TVs go in there. And so watch out. Yeah. On a phone because of dance comp. So yes. As much as you attempt to avoid family influences in basketball. Somehow they wove their way back in. Yeah.

Clancy Denton  19:20
So that was I'm trying to think of other things. I mean, are this really and like I said, when we were early on dating, and even early marriage, it was the month of March on weekends. And I mean, I remember it used to kill you when they would start there. You know, now it even starts Tuesday and Wednesday, but it always started Thursday, Friday, the first two rounds and you know, used to say I wish I could just take off one of these days and just go and why and you know, and over the years you been able to do that. Now, I get mad those two weeks. because my stories, your stories, my story that is on CBS that I've talked about before, and I've watched since I was young, they're not on on Thursday and Friday of this week or next week. And yes, it just, it used to upset me. And now I have enough other things to watch. But

Rick Denton  20:19
we have, it is funny, we all have that intensity around things is has definitely evolved. We were talking about that. Yet, not only just being willing to watch the game at different times, and that sort of stuff. But there was a time that I would be very emotionally wrapped and I still am I want my team to win, but when they would lose I was really in a pissy mood. Yeah. And and what I love is somebody back then in the young dating days, found a way to help me out of that mood with a little bit of lace in lingerie. I haven't I haven't seen

Clancy Denton  20:57
that doesn't happen.

Rick Denton  21:00
So so I'm back to being really cranky when Duke loses. I used it used to be this kind of twisted sort of Costanza esque vibe. Well, maybe I kind of want to

Clancy Denton  21:11
know when they got beat by Carolina. What a couple of weeks ago you came in and said Yeah, where's the launcher is like, sorry. That's not happening.

Rick Denton  21:21
Oh, like I can still hope there's there's still hope.

Clancy Denton  21:27
Yeah, it's it's it's a fun season. i No matter how much you enjoy it. I actually, I haven't done a bracket. In a really, really long time. I actually did a bracket this time and I texted Tanner and said, Hey, I'm doing one. You don't do them anymore because it

Rick Denton  21:44
I quit two decades ago. It made you I don't I'd say I don't like the way that I watched the tournament ruined my enjoyment ever because I want to root for the underdog, not who I picked on my bracket. I quit doing a while ago. So

Clancy Denton  21:56
yeah, but it'll be interesting to see my final four is still intact. There hasn't been anything when I have Purdue. Oh, that's right. That's yeah, I don't know. I don't like to kick their butt. Yeah, no, I I didn't go with any I mean, all of our families teams are still Baylor still in Arizona. Still in Duke still in. One. That's what we want to talk about the other team? Yeah. Well,

Rick Denton  22:20
I think that's the foreshadowing that I described as Yeah, Tegan comes on a basketball of all the schools for end up at she ends up at Arizona which is been known for being a basketball school and Tegan is not, she enjoys sports. She's not rabid about it. I wouldn't even call her passionate about it. She enjoys sports and she enjoys seeing it live on TV not so much. Even this year, of course, Duke had set up a home and home series with Arizona and Arizona comes to Cameron and beats Duke this year so this girl who impeded my final four has now gone to a school that's beaten down and I'm wearing Arizona clothes when I used to kind of really dislike them and now I'm rooting for them.

Clancy Denton  23:06
She does you know she was in class when Arizona was playing their first game on Thursday this week or Friday camera which they were Thursday Saturday so you know she but I mean the second she got out and look to see if they want or not. Tanner had already fired off these these are our text and there's four pages of them so we're not going to read them all out loud. But Tanner had already fired off Oh, I forgot to talk about this. Well let's go back I know Yeah, okay, sorry. I didn't go hey, remember

Rick Denton  23:41
the what the first episode is titled we're not professionals. We're not professionals. We totally forgot I

Clancy Denton  23:45
know so 2020 No, no yeah, there was no turn of everything stopped

Rick Denton  23:51
there was in the middle of the conference tournament stuff they all

Clancy Denton  23:56
so there was you know that's our entertainment and March and April so we were reduced to watching slippery stairs competition

Rick Denton  24:09
this is what it came to so yeah you if you remember the slippery stairs It was like stairs may be covered on

Clancy Denton  24:16
coming soap and they had no it was

Rick Denton  24:20
ridiculous thing so thank God we're out of that area totally

Clancy Denton  24:23
for now I know that was a really hard because there was no soccer no no sports yeah on I mean that was a rough season so anyways but getting back to the tech So yes, we have four pages. Tanner kicked it off

Rick Denton  24:41
by kick it off by saying you know hey, the first before they started in Arizona is March Madness begins and asked Do they go long beach in Long Beach was the darling story of the sea that was going to maybe be cheesy and well,

Clancy Denton  24:53
the coach that had been fired before and was still coaching. Say Yeah, so I mean The minute she you know, when she got aware and got out of law, you know, then she talks about deacons going back and forth. I mean, it's just and some of her

Rick Denton  25:10
what the talk. Yeah.

Clancy Denton  25:14
Some of her comebacks are really

Rick Denton  25:18
funny. Well, because Tanner goes to Arizona State, they did not have a good year in basketball, there's they should be better than they are. They're not. And so he says, you know, well, at least we're winning the series against Jalan baseball.

Clancy Denton  25:33
So I mean, yeah, her response. Well, yeah. have found with baseball. I think I'd rather rather watch my team in a fast paced sport. They actually when she's salty. Yeah. Now, people who like there are people like baseball. Yes. It's not. But yeah. So I mean, she was there was some good.

Rick Denton  25:51
I was loving my popcorn just watched it back and forth. Didn't say anything.

Clancy Denton  25:55
So yeah. So they were having fun and just, you know? Yeah.

Rick Denton  26:04
For those that are listening, you should watch because we're reading it here. But you know, Tegan basically just said, Hey, we want more than he no matter what you say to her. And

Clancy Denton  26:13
I told her, her uncle Casey has Arizona picked up wins. So I mean, that has been the trash talk between those two because they go to rival schools has been during football season. And now during the final four even though you know Tanner's team? Yes, it's not even in it. But nope.

Rick Denton  26:34
Yeah. And you know what, that's fun. It's been fun to watch that. This kind of stuff. As empty nesters, we're not going to be as always, like the focal point of our kids lives and does what a statement. You really enjoy seeing the siblings enjoy each other without us. Yeah, I mean, we're in this text chain, but we really aren't like, I'm just popping popcorn and just eating watching it. I would love if it's sports, whatever it is. That's one thing you hope for your kids as they maintain that connectivity going forward and have a relationship. And I'm confident that they will Yeah, it's just nice to see. And they

Clancy Denton  27:11
have because they they text each other without being on our family chain. And especially with extra help with math help with, you know, yeah, well, you read my essay, you know, they so they write they text, and so yeah, but so that's been fun. And yeah, so now you talked about, you know, the empty nest, watching of games, and you know, it is different. I stay for the Duke games, and I watched most of the Arizona game yesterday, but then I kind of go and do my own thing I let you you know, well, then I

Rick Denton  27:47
kind of liken it to you anything that's enjoyable. Like, it feels like I've been on a what is about to be a four day Bender, of basketball at the end of it, you kind of need a cleansing detox. We're not quite there yet. I got the Duke game this afternoon by the end of this weekend. Sure. I want a little break. As we've gotten into this emptiness phase, and as I will just call me, I don't want to use the word mature, but just evolved and aware. It's fun, it's important. But I'm not going to let it just be the only thing I do because there's a ticking clock to all of our lives. And so if something's fun, let's go do that something fun. Well, what's great is if you can combine both and we've talked about going into the PGA the headquarters being near us then there's a great open area to it when the weather's right to sit outside well, they got a big TV now so yesterday afternoon when i Let's head out there. Let's go grab a few drinks. Let's sit in some Adirondack chairs and just watch the game out there with the sun and it was great

Clancy Denton  28:42
and we did and our neighbors came up because they were already coming up to there was a dueling pianos thing going on later in the evening and so they had already planned to come out so they came up and joined us. Shayla and Eric and Lexi and so yeah, it was just a nice sitting outside weather it was almost perfect it was a little chilly. And then you get hot because the sun I mean I have sun Oh, I got oh my face Yeah. But yeah, now that's such a nice asset to have that close to us and that we can just I mean in three minutes be up there and for a nice nice afternoon evening. So yeah, so that was fun. March Madness right way to watch March Madness. I mean, we we have been that would be interesting to see because there's been times I think when I was flying I think you came out because I remember watching a game in like the hotel bar in Lubbock or something. Oh, well,

Rick Denton  29:49
that was the that was I don't know if it wasn't March Madness. I was just a regular Okay, Maryland game was down by 10 down by 10 with one minute to go and came back down the game. And then
