We had a great weekend in Arizona with the kids and their friends but are we getting too old to hang with the college crowd?

Did we see fossils or are we just calling ourselves that??

Clancy Denton  0:00
Welcome to the loud quiet. Ooh, empty nester. Okay. What does that mean?

Rick Denton  0:06
I think that actually probably is the theme of the empty nest. What are we doing? Let's do this. Let's do this thing. is this Recording?. Okay,

Clancy Denton  0:15
great. Sans, children just us. We need a tissue box up here. Follow along on our journey and maybe you know we can learn from others to be empty nesters if this is the loud, quiet, living the empty nest

Alright, hey guys, welcome to the loud quiet or from the road. Back in Arizona, Episode 25. We just decided while we're driving back to the airport in Phoenix, we might as well get a podcast in as

Rick Denton  0:52
those that listen in view, though some of these are kind of impulsive. And that's what this one is. This was a clip the camera to the car. And let's have a little chat because it was a fun weekend. There was a lot to the weekend. And we have an hour and a half. We're not going to make this an hour and a half. But we got a drive. And beautiful day. So far, so good on the road. So if we just recap our weekend for each other, and hopefully y'all enjoy the stories as well.

Clancy Denton  1:26
So yeah, so we came out, you know, we, as we've said, we like to visit the kids probably once a month. Now that they're both out here. We definitely try to come once a month or

Rick Denton  1:39
certainly at least every six weeks. Right. You know, we're definitely in the month and a half at the very least.

Clancy Denton  1:44
Yeah, I mean this one, you know, they they both went back on January 9, so it hadn't quite been a month but yeah, this was the only weekend that we could cut in. There's just so many Arizona has so many events going on during this time of year of course because it's beautiful. So we have to also you know we couldn't come next weekend because Tanner's go into the waste management golf tournament and try to get

Rick Denton  2:13
flights or forget about that.

Clancy Denton  2:15
You know, we actually had a hard time finding a hotel in Tucson for this weekend that we're here because it's the gym festival and that continues on through next week. Which if you know anything about Arizona or from Tucson the Jim J em festival is apparently sorry chi

Rick Denton  2:38
with cave and so much amongst ourselves it's all a festival for a bunch of gyms. It's actually rock stone jewelers

Clancy Denton  2:48
that just doesn't roll off your tongue though. Gee,

Rick Denton  2:50
no it does. Everybody stopped down and try to say how you'd say Jim and you'd see why we spelled a j i am so

Clancy Denton  2:57
yeah, so there's just so many events going on that we had to balance that with trying to figure out when we can come out here and

Rick Denton  3:04
it's We love coming out here this time of year because now those of us that are those y'all that are watching, you can look to the Sun review the Windows is beautiful, gorgeous here. We though so booked it planning alright February trip get out there. It's been miserable weather in Texas and great weather in Arizona. The week before we came out here was one of those gorgeous Texas weeks it was sunshine 60s 70s no rain. And then we saw the forecast here was going to be cold and raining. We thought what the heck hat that actually true. I even said to clients if we were retired, I'd be changing our trip to come out a few days early so we didn't have the weekend. And classic Arizona style. We landed and whatever storms had come through happened before we got here and truly it has been gorgeous chilly, but a gorgeous 60 degrees Sun a little bit of sun on the back your neck makes it feels 70s

Clancy Denton  4:01
And we're you know it's interesting because we're leaving Tucson right now. And you just don't ever equate snow and Arizona now there is up north is a reg ski plays area. But there's snow on the mountains that ring Tucson and they have us there's a ski resort you know probably 3045 minutes from Tegan. So it's interesting seeing that, you know, it's kind of Colorado like in that may where there's still snow up on the very, very tip tops of the mountains.

Rick Denton  4:38
There was one street that we were driving on it had such a Colorado village look because it was a narrow street and I came downtown or some narrow street buildings on the side and in the background. Was that huge mountain and then the snow cap white on top. It really It felt Colorado these are the things we didn't realize about the state until we kept coming here. No we're not doing the Arizona traveler. Bureau it seems like though each week we're telling folks to travel here and we just love it here. Yeah,

Clancy Denton  5:05
well yeah we do and it's just like we said, you know, the weather just turned off great and you know, a little colder than I would like my Arizona trips to be but it was still it was still good I mean, we know yeah borrow pride and borrow coat from you know Tanner's friend when we get to what we all we did with him and his brands. And so that's

Rick Denton  5:32
so we came in Friday and got well of course what happens on Friday, we go straight to grocery store. Anytime you visited, I don't know when the stops yes, we're empty nesters. However, we're still whenever we arrive it's grocery store time

Clancy Denton  5:51
for the kid. Yeah, that's

Rick Denton  5:54
a good clarification. They're like I just need a few things at Trader Joe's and that basket just kept filling and filling and filling

Clancy Denton  6:01
but that was my first time to really shop or look at Trader Joe's and you know I was really surprised that our prices are not any some of them were better than the grocery stores you know that we shop at a home because we don't have a Trader Joe's close enough to us to justify shopping there but but yeah he he has fallen in love with Trader Joe's it's close to his apartment and

Rick Denton  6:29
so we got him got the got the shop and he needed to clean up do a little bit of homework. So we did the same kind of went back to the hotel and then we met and you'll hear a very recurring theme. And anytime we talk about get do the tanner so the three of us then went out to a happy aren't we like to go to call it a steak place. I'm like that sit down have a martini something like that. And so found Roaring Fork, which is a place that we know from Austin, like alright, let's head up to that would walk in. And it's completely different than what we recognize. And I mentioned that to the host hostess and said, you know, this looks different than our Roaring Fork and she goes Oh, are y'all from Austin? immediately knew that we were talking I don't know if it's a chain there but enjoyed sitting up there. Classic Arizona good sir. She was really busy at first but then just so friendly.

Clancy Denton  7:18
Don't need to look and see if it started in Arizona or for started in Austin because we're seeing such an influx of Arizona restaurants to the Dallas area. And so I curious to know which came first but But talking about, again, friendly people but you know when we walked in the hotel that we stand is the hotel we always stay at on now that Tanner is at his new townhome because it's very close to it. And I mean we walked in and she was like, Oh, y'all haven't been here in a couple of months. I mean they I wonder I told her I said Do we just have a look or something that because and it's the she said that every time just like Oh y'all are back so it's the same I'm amazed as the same girl still working there but super friendly and yeah, so yeah, we did. whirring for it. And then there's a new restaurants up slash club that finally open the kids had all been Tanner's group and all been waiting for it to open all last semester and then it opened I think right before break. It's called Bang Bang. And I mean it is like Japanese themed and like it's like Japanese oh I know it's Japanese but I was trying to say it looks like someone just vomited Japanese stuff Oh,

Rick Denton  8:50
like you're living in Indiana? Yes. Not exactly.

Clancy Denton  8:54
The table was all poking on. But it's it's nice like it's not it has a

Rick Denton  9:00
very upscale feel to it you walk by a really attractive cherry blossom as you're going up the stairs the lighting, the lighting is very clubbed right it's that purple and hot pink colors throughout and it's because now the food was absolutely great it turns into a nightclub after after our time

Clancy Denton  9:18
that yeah the food was good yeah cuz there was a you know, the euro and right there the DJ but the rope when you go in and the bouncer guy you know checking IDs if you needed to but

Rick Denton  9:30
not check my ID

Clancy Denton  9:31
I don't think he checked any of ours because we were eating but so yeah, had a great one of Tanner's roommates joined us there and one of

Rick Denton  9:41
the hostesses Tanner actually knew one of the hostesses which is always kind of fun. And that happens a lot in a college town where the your friends or the people that you know from school or working service industry places and so and the reason I mentioned is because I mentioned this again, but yeah, so we knew the or he knew the hostess as we were going in to bang bang great sushi. It's a very creative sushi as well. The

Clancy Denton  10:05
roles were good. Everything was at that was fun. And

Rick Denton  10:11
so this is, you know, 730 reservation realized we flew in that day, our timezone differences time. So that's an 830 reservation, but we're wrapping up. And so I don't know. Let's just keep the night going. And we ended up at Casey Moore's, which is another one that y'all have heard us mention a lot, which is that outdoor porch area and go there met some more of Tanner's friends and different

Clancy Denton  10:36
groups, different groups, different groups. Yeah,

Rick Denton  10:40
though, is we should be in bed at this point. And we're just enjoying having a pint there. You had your green tea drink that they've got there. And it's such a chill play. We won't talk about it too much detail because folks have heard us talk about Casey Moore's. It's just so it's

Clancy Denton  10:56
just a neat vibe. It's easy going. It's just it's a great. New Yeah, it's just, and some of these places we couldn't go to because they are hardcore 21 They're not letting you if you're fake is not, you know. So

Rick Denton  11:15
we're done with some folks join they had around. It's what maybe 30 Yeah, so let's go back, right. Let's go home. Now. How did this happen?

Clancy Denton  11:30
Well, okay, because here, here's what happened at bang, bang. The waitress said, Oh, if y'all want to come back later, because you dined here, you can come back for the DJ show tonight. So she gave us you know, she like just get wristbands down at the stand. So Tanner got four, as you know, knowing that it wasn't going to be for us. I'm

Rick Denton  11:54
just laughing about the fact that wristbands, right that alone more than a wristband for a club and

Clancy Denton  12:01
30 years, so I don't ever remember having wristband on your hand. But so we were sitting there at Casey Moore's and the two girls that came and joined us with our other with other people. You know, we started talking and Tina was like, Oh, well, let's go. You know, y'all want to go to bang, bang, and I looked at recognize, like, you're not gonna go back to bang bang. I

Rick Denton  12:27
told you. I'm would

Clancy Denton  12:29
I know. That's what I was saying. You were like, I'll do it. I was like, Okay,

Rick Denton  12:32
I think we were trying, it was a game.

Clancy Denton  12:35
I'm the one who's gonna say,

Rick Denton  12:38
No, I don't want to be the one that says I want to go to bed we were playing chicken. So then

Clancy Denton  12:43
then we started talking about, well, let's try casa. We like casa. That's the one that we went to Parents Weekend. And then I think I actually said, or somebody brought up Loki and I was like, Oh, we haven't been there yet. That's like the ability or Yeah, although I don't really know why they this one is not. It's just a piano where they play the songs that you request, but and so we're like, Okay, let's go to low key. So we I said, well, we'll just have it so we just headed over that direction. And then we got we saw the line to Casa because we walked by no way it was it would have been probably over an hour. Wait. And no,

Rick Denton  13:28
that's a game of chicken that you and I both

Clancy Denton  13:31
in the kids even they were like, no. So we walked down to low key and of course Tanner knows one of the bouncers there so we met him he was super sweet fraternity brother. So then we just we went into Loki super fun. All singing that's my voice is like still raspy from yelling, singing. That's where we are.

Rick Denton  13:54
We added as a subterranean Club, which that already kind of makes it feel kind of cool. The lighting the stairs, they had the drum kit there was I think a guy playing bass. If not, it was guitar the to piano, high energy place. People are singing the songs that all of us know. And that's obviously the point of it. Getting a bunch of our folks singing at the top of their lungs was an absolute blast.

Clancy Denton  14:18
Well, and what was fun is that there were all different ages there. So the genres of music were all over but it just again, we talked about this before how our kids know, you know, the velvet poison came on caner was singing every word you know. I mean it was just all kinds

Rick Denton  14:41
of fun is the song that we are young. Yeah, came on and I was thinking we are old to that one because I'm starting to feel a certain point. It was and so this is where we're cruising right around approaching midnight again to our bodies one in the morning. We are

Clancy Denton  14:57
we all deines you or there they have the fishbowl so not now I've had the bucket at Casa and I've had the fishable. And most people know what a fishbowl is if you weren't went to college bars ever but so easy to visualize. Yeah,

Rick Denton  15:13
so small ice booze mixer.

Clancy Denton  15:17
So it's two, which I don't I guess the kids finish theirs. I didn't finish mine. I just, but so yeah, so then we look over, it's like, at this point, it's after midnight. And I say Tanner rip in the bands to give to all to the four that were there. And so, Rick and I were like, okay, yeah, we're out. You know, y'all go have fun and bang, bang. And I think

Rick Denton  15:42
they were in this as you and I were talking about this, I think they too are the Alright, we've enjoyed parting with the parents. It's time now to just be college kids again. They never make us feel that way. But it was sort of Alright, there's a natural break here. So they put the wristbands on and we didn't get we said bye to them. We didn't get back to the hotel until just shy of one. It was one of those where we checked into the lobby. And all the lights were off. There was nobody there

Clancy Denton  16:10
was a lobby door. Yeah, that

Rick Denton  16:12
and they get that's two o'clock to our bodies. So so there you go. The dens. The 10s went clubbing

Clancy Denton  16:20
I mean, yeah, we're doing over this. It was for that was four stops.

Rick Denton  16:25
Yeah, after a day that we flow. Like, we didn't take a crack at dawn flight. So thank goodness, it just know, we were our days started in Frisco. And here we are.

Clancy Denton  16:35
Yeah. And, you know, when we're only because now that we kind of split our weekends with Tegan and Tanner, you know, we were there for one night. So we're like, alright, bang it all out in one night. And we did. Yeah.

It was fun. So.

So yeah, so we, you know, parted it up with Tanner and his crew. And the other thing is, we know that going to visit Tegan is a completely different experience. We knew we would not be going out to those kinds of places after we do dinner. So So yeah, so we knew that that we could, we could do one night of that and not not have it again the next night. So yeah, so we got up the next day and had to drop something. Oh, we went and walked in. We lived Papago Park and had to take something to Tanner that had gotten left in our car because they obviously bluebird home and then got on the road to

Rick Denton  17:42
the reversible. Which Thankfully, this the 10 drive. It's easy. As long as there's not traffic, it's it gets a little boring, but it's it's short. And

Clancy Denton  17:54
it is just so nice. You know, I wish I could see what we see for this year that we have been able to do this. They are so close because we don't know what next year is going to look like

Rick Denton  18:10
and Tegan it ended up in Colorado That's close. But that's not the same as go partying with T anner driving down to C, teagan and the next day you couldn't

Clancy Denton  18:18
combine into a weekend and have to be an extended weekend or we've been we would be going to two different places two weekends a month. So yeah, so we went and got her and what we do first we went to bison, which is we I was starving. Right

Rick Denton  18:33
so we didn't do lunch grocery but no lunch basin, which is please

Clancy Denton  18:41
say yeah, so we went and ate and caught up with her and,

Rick Denton  18:43
and yes, did go do some shopping. It wasn't full on grocery shop. And then it was off to the gym festival. Or so we tried. So the gym festival without because this is not a gym podcast. Apparently, it's this big, stinking deal. We didn't realize, though, that it's across 40 different locations across the city. And not all of them are available to the public. And the one that we chose to go to was one of those. It's not available to the public. So imagine kind of the stereotypical event conference style with everybody in their business blazers, buttoned down a pants wearing their badges and it

Clancy Denton  19:26
was at the Tucson convention correct.

Rick Denton  19:29
And we could see it you saw like the floor and all the booths set up for the different jewelers and stone and wholesalers and all that it. We definitely were fish out of water though. And there were a lot of views of scans. Looking at us wondering why we were there walk we walked right through somebody's talk and interrupted their dogs. But we technically have been to the gym festival. At least we have

Clancy Denton  19:53
a picture. Meow it was I mean, again,

Rick Denton  19:56
it is amazing to see the scale. It's just the on

Clancy Denton  20:02
social media and the event planning, marketing needs to update or not update, but make it a little more user friendly. Because we couldn't figure out which one was the real. Yeah, it tells you. It was. It was for sure you think so? Yeah. So we just walked through there and cruised through there. And it would be interesting to see. And I told you as well, we have three more years. You know, her our Linda's husband, Jerry, who we've mentioned many times, he is a huge has all kinds of geology. Yeah. So and Jim.

Rick Denton  20:49
And really significant and impressive. And we

Clancy Denton  20:53
we sent our picture at the gym festival to him because we knew and he would like to come see it one day. So hopefully next year, maybe we can figure it out. Because it would be interesting to just walk through the stuff that we're allowed to walk through. Or just

Rick Denton  21:09
continue to buster. Of all the things that I've gatecrashed. That's probably the least cool to get to the gym festival. But well, we we Jim

Clancy Denton  21:19
crash, and I loved when we came out. You know, Tegan was like, well, that's typical for us. And it is every time we're with her somewhere. we've stumbled into some weird where we're not supposed to be and she's like, Yeah, I like that. We just walked through and laughed the whole time because we weren't supposed to be in there. So

Rick Denton  21:39
we were close to downtown, it's kind of without it was close enough to downtown. We're just gonna walk over there because there's a lot of restaurants and things to do. Well, we went and sat, we're gonna take the train there instead of walking and went, well train and show up. But it was kind of an interesting experience that there was we're presuming she was homeless, I can be wrong, but just started talking to us and what was one of the most friendly conversations got into a conversation about drumming. She had some bowl that she was drumming on, but her drums were in storage. And Tegan later said, actually, kind of like the rhythm that she was

Clancy Denton  22:13
the solid and and Tegan is so she may not be comfortable talking to adults or peers that are in her room, sometimes until she warms up to them. But I mean, man, she started like the lady asked one question and Tegan was having a full blown conversation with her and I think that just shows Tegan just have a heart for that kind of, you know, your action and but she's also aware she didn't I knew she wasn't threatening. She said now I would not put myself in a place you know, but she's just compassionate.

Rick Denton  22:51
Well, that's and she has this sort of entry into she starts everything in a judgments free zone. Yes. Whereas I think even I felt somewhat guarded. Okay, I don't know this was one clearly isn't part of the festival. I think, you know, let's put it on guard. Now. Tegan entered in, in a judgment free and I think even in that interaction, I learned a little bit about myself that I could probably do better at and I was impressed with what I learned about my daughter in her judgment free elements. Yeah.

Clancy Denton  23:21
So yeah, so we just left there and watched it downtown and just decided to go get ice cream because

Rick Denton  23:26
that's what you do. Well, we can't go see the gym festival. Let's eat ice cream. Yeah.

Clancy Denton  23:32
So yeah, so we did that and then

Rick Denton  23:35
show the watch didn't lose we're not gonna talk about Duke had a really bad to Caroline Kagan

Clancy Denton  23:41
just came back to the hotel with us because she just doesn't like being in her room very much. These days. So she just came back with us and we didn't really have a lot of time over. We had to go and start picking up the round to children for dinner

Rick Denton  23:56
and picking up and then the dropping off. There's a lot of drama. I'm glad when they're all going to be together next year. We ended up at Emilio's Mexican Kitchen Kitchen. Yes. This was a second location that they have. Fantastic. We're really starting to enjoy the Sonoran style. Very chimichanga burrito Carnia saw, we can see maybe I'm enjoying some of the meals

we've taught the food is great. And what really impressed us or what was just enjoyable as it was Tegan and five of her friends. There's just so much kindness in this group. They well No Forget kind for a second. That was what you had brought in and you're right. They're so well mannered, so friendly, so enjoyable. You hear so much about the the sullenness phone addicted young generation blah, blah. Well, some of that may be true, but it's also garbage and a lot of cases these kids were in credibly engaging, incredibly polite, very willing to talk to us or talk to their friends. It just was a dinner party of eight.

Clancy Denton  25:08
I think it goes to show you that, like minded people navigate towards like minded people. You know, as we've said Tegan likes, she likes a small group. But she gets very tight with the ones and she's very loyal. And she has found, you know, when they had to cut out? I don't know, not a not. So there's a couple that, you know, they don't hang out with anymore because they didn't like the way that they treated people and treated each other and that kind of thing. So I think it just shows you that yes. You know, like minded but yeah, they're all just so sweet and chatty. And yes, very well mannered. And Tanner's groups that he has are the same at ASU, you know, we've been very pleased with the groups that they have both fallen into. So

Rick Denton  26:06
yeah, it's one of those because your kids could go off to school. And you could worry about the influences as they fall into whatever that is social style, even chemicals or alcohol or those kinds of things. We've been very lucky as parents to have kids that chose friends, group, friend groups that we would have chosen for them. We are on board with who they've met, not for the record, not that we have any influence. We're just very happy about it and of the way it does,

Clancy Denton  26:33
yes. And so yeah, that was fun. And I, again, like we've said, and race one of Tanner's as one of vegans from he and I were talking, you know about how we just haven't had a bad meal since we've been here? And he said, Yeah, I said, I really enjoy all the food in Tucson. And yeah, we really haven't. We have not yet to the state had a bad meal there or in Phoenix, but Tucson is a smaller city, so not as much selection but everything has been so good. And the places Tegan has been going every Friday for lunch out with one of her friends. And she's some of the places they have found have been so good. And so she wants to introduce us to those and fine by me. Yeah, while we told her you know, next year, if Tanner doesn't end up staying in Arizona for law school, you know, the weekend will be you know, all hers, so we can go and try some of the places and do that kind of thing. Yeah, comically

Rick Denton  27:38
was putting some pressure on, you realize you got to entertain us for two days. Yeah,

Clancy Denton  27:43
but she's fine. By me. That means more meals for me. So it was fun, and it was good. And we,

Rick Denton  27:50
in what time we got back to the hotel later than you might think. But that's because we had an hour of dropping people off across all different points in Tucson.

Clancy Denton  28:00
Well, and again, our reservation started at 7am with eight people and at this restaurant, and I appreciated this the waitress super friendly again, as always, we always just have good service out here. You know, she told us when we ordered them, we make everything fresh in house, you know, so it may take a little long is that okay? And we're like, Oh, yeah. And it? I mean, it did it took a while to get our food, but it was well worth it. And so yeah, we didn't leave. I mean, we shut down the restaurant closed at nine. And I think we were wandering out at nine. And so yeah, so we recently took Alex out and then drop Tegan off. And yeah, we were we were in bed by 1015 It was so nice.

Rick Denton  28:44
15 lights out so different is different between night one and night two for sure.

Clancy Denton  28:48
But you know, I, I took the picture of Tegan and her friends and I might ask her to ask permission if I can put it up because they're all They're just shocked when I looked at her face. She's so happy sorry.

Rick Denton  29:09
Wow. I was not expecting tears on this one.

Clancy Denton  29:12
Well, it just makes me so happy because this has been

if she would not have met this group at the very beginning of school, which she put herself out there, and she you know basically and and found this group of people that had a common interest which they don't even do anymore, which is you know, shows you that they really did click as a friend group not just based on an activity and stuff that they were into. If she would not have found this her this she probably would have come home and it's an austere, so not because of the class that she loves or classes the situation so

Rick Denton  29:57
group is surrounding her protected her given her an escape He plays when she's needed an escape place. Yes, this is you're right about the beaming smile on our faces a sincere beaming smile. And they

Clancy Denton  30:10
all you can just tell they all just generally really like and appreciate each other. And you know, I told them all last night, she had gotten up to go to the restaurant and I just told them how much I appreciate it. And they were all just like, oh my gosh, we love Dee. And you know, she's awesome. And but it is just so heartwarming to see kid kids that are like your kid that are just kind and want to be there for each other and will be there for each other. You know, like I even heard her and Alex, you know, she said, Okay, well, I see you before Wednesday, because he lives off campus and she was he was like, well I can be here on Monday. You want me to be here on campus on Monday you know, they're just so generally want to be around each other and help each other and have fun so so yeah, it was just a nice really ending. And

which is a great like, here we are driving by we had we got up we had breakfast with Tegan and that is another great diner, great place. I think I would rather end it though on that just kind of the the feelings. This drive back is one that will tears have shown up but they're tears of happiness, tears of joy tears of the thankfulness because as an empty nester, you do push your kids out of the nest, but you really want them to thrive. And you don't know as they're falling out of the nest. And well, here's another example of how she's soaring and, and the thriving that she's doing. And it's great to see

and just hearing them already, you know, talking about next year and living together and you know, they all have they were all they all have their life 360 groups, and they can see where everyone is. And you know, they're very old for being. Yeah, Tanner has that, too. But I told him though, I said, I want you all to make a roommate one next year. And she and Alex said, oh, yeah, we've already started it with their other roommate that's coming from back where we live. And so I said, Yeah, because that's also a safety thing. If you know that someone is not at home, then you can see where they're at. And, you know, so yeah, it's just it's just so it just warmed my heart and I I am so thankful that we can go and take her friends out to just show them appreciation. You know,

Rick Denton  32:48
you know a lot of clothes you brought up. You brought in Valentine's.

Clancy Denton  32:52
Oh yeah, I brought them each a little. I was like, Oh, that's so nice mom, because none of us right now have boyfriends or girlfriends.

Rick Denton  33:02
